Economic development practitioners are dedicated to providing competent, ethical service to the communities they serve in the field of economic and community development. They strive to provide accurate, reliable information to the business community. They are committed to the economic, social, cultural, and environmental well-being of their communities, and promoted development initiatives in keeping with these principles.

CANDO members promote high professional and ethical standards in all of their activities as economic-development professionals.

In striving to meet high professional and ethical standards, CANDO members are committed to the following principles:

  • Members will carry out all activities in a manner that maintains the good reputation of the profession and its ability to serve the public interest.
  • Members will ensure that the level of professional service they provide is competent and in keeping with the high level of standards set out by CANDO, through continuing study of the profession's developments and innovations. Members will endeavor to perfect themselves in their chosen occupations, to the best of their ability, as an opportunity to serve our collective society.
  • Members will maintain a spirit of fairness in competition, and help eradicate all forms of deception that violate that spirit.
  • When dealing with clients, members will hold themselves free of any interest, influence, or relationship regarding any professional activity that could impair - or, in the reasonable view of the observer, appear to impair - professional judgment or objectivity.
  • Members will keep in confidence the affairs of any client, colleague, or organization and any confidential information obtained in the course of professional activities. Members will not exploit information obtained in the course of their duties for their own advantage.
  • Member conduct their activities on a high ethical plane, raising by example the standards of conduct for economic development.
  • Members will continuously raise the standard of the profession by conducting research and sharing methodology and developments with one another.
  • Members will treat one another with the respect and consideration due professional colleagues.
  • Members will exemplify good citizenship, realizing that the strength of a nation depends on the caliber of its individual citizens.
  • Members will abide by the principles laid down in the Code of Ethics for the Council, and will comply with all CANDO bylaws, regulations, resolutions and rules of professional conduct.
