Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC)

INAC supports Aboriginal people (First Nations, Inuit and Metis) and Northerners in their efforts to:

  • improve social, well-being and economic prosperity;
  • develop healthier, more sustainable communities; and
  • participate more fully in Canada's political, social and economic development-to the benefit of all Canada.

Economic development is an important element in INAC's mandate. INAC works to increase First Nation, Inuit and Metis participation in the workforce across Canada. This benefits Aboriginal individuals, families, communities, employers and the Canadian economy as a whole.

What is INAC doing to promote economic development?

INAC's economic development programs provide funding to community organizations (or organizations they designate). These organizations use the funding for their economic development projects and the delivery of services to community members. The Department also encourages both the private and public sectors to add First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples to their current workforce, and promote the use of Aboriginal businesses for federal governments supplies and services.
