Miyo Machihowin National Aboriginal Health Careers Conference & Tradeshow - Native Women’s Association of Canada, Edmonton, AB

Mar 11-12, 2010

The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is a national Aboriginal organization that seeks to enhance, promote and foster the social, economic, cultural and political well-being of First Nations and Métis women in Aboriginal and Canadian societies. As the national voice for Aboriginal women in Canada we are committed to improving the health and well-being of Aboriginal people from a holistic and culturally-sensitive perspective.

Miyo Machihowin means “good health” in Cree. This event is named in honour of the territory in which it is taking place.

NWAC will host this energetic two-day conference and tradeshow to provide Aboriginal youth with an opportunity to explore and discover the wide array of professions available within the Canadian health sector.

Our vision for the event is to help guide the career paths of young Aboriginal people to create healthy futures for life!

The event is designed to increase the number of Aboriginal people in health careers and is supported by the generous contributions from the Health Canada’s Aboriginal Health Human Resource Initiative (AHHRI), which shares this goal.

Young Aboriginal people are increasingly focused and ambitious when planning their futures. They are aware of labour shortages, the influence of their demographic and the multitude of professional choices available to them. At the same time young Aboriginal people are looking for educational institutions and employers who communicate an understanding of Aboriginal culture, values and history. Miyo Machihowin offers a unique opportunity to enter into a lively dialogue with young people who are eager to decide on a career path.

Miyo Machihowin will attract more than 1500 youths. All of them are preparing to enter the workforce and will attend to gather information, network and learn about opportunities in the health field.

To encourage as much interaction and networking as possible, all youth delegates receive the Miyo Machihowin Passport. Delegates collect your signature after their conversation with you to qualify for prizes at the end of the conference.
