Jean Vavrek


Fluently bilingual in English and French (with additional skills in Swedish), Mr. Vavrek graduated from Concordia University's Executive MBA (now known as the John Molson School of Business) program in 1995. Mr. Vavrek also graduated from St-Lawrence College as a certified electrical engineering technologist in 1981. He holds two certificates from Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) de Montréal, one in Management of Marketing and one in Management of Production and Operations.

In May 2003, Jean was appointed the Executive Director of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum, after having served as Vice President, performance services, for Laurentide Controls Ltd, the business partner for Emerson Process Management in Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces, where he was employed since 1999. Prior to this, Jean spent the majority of his career, since 1981, with ABB, in various positions, across the country and in Sweden, where throughout the years he held the positions of Manager Engineering Department Process Control Systems, Business Unit Manager Mining and Metals Canada, Sales Manager Industrial Accounts Eastern Canada, Partnership Manager (Cominco) and Manager Service High and Medium Voltage Apparatus.

In his recent years at the CIM a lot of his efforts has been focused on the "softer" aspects of the industry, for example in the areas of human resources, public outreach and education, community inter-actions, innovation and social responsibility.
