2007 Conference Logo
Our 7th Generation Economies logo was specially made for the 2007 CANDO
conference by Kamloops Indian Band member and artist, Dave ‘Raven’
Seymour. The ring of various colors represents: blue, the water; red,
the people; green, the earth, and yellow the sun. The Secwepemc people
used fur and hides as currency, specifically beaver, or sqlu7úẃi. The
term money, or sqleẃ, is derived from this expression. The images
surrounding the beaver represent the various economies that support the
people from British Columbia’s Interior – cattle, water, culture,
forestry, sports, fishing, and mining.
Meet the Artist
David Seymour knew the power of colour ever since he was 4 years old. He began his journey as an artist by picking up a red crayon and drawing. David thought “I can rule the world with this crayon.†He was amazed at what he was able to create and how inspired he was by a box of crayons. After that, David was consumed by the urge to create, draw, and colour.
David says his work is spiritually uplifting to him and finds it rejuvenating. “Painting, it’s like food to me,†he said. “You need a variety of colours to survive.†He enjoys his work so much that he admits to feeling guilty about getting paid for what he enjoys to do the most.
“A highlight I really enjoyed in my life, was compiling a colouring book for children,†David said. “All the sketches I did for the colouring book came from my memories of my childhood.†He hopes his work conveys the cultural and traditional aspects of Secwepemc life to the future generations. He likes to capture historical activities of daily living in the hopes of preserving them.
“My inspiration just comes from all over,†he says, “My belief is that everything has got some sort of life, even a pebble laying on the beach.†David’s family has been a tremendous influence on him, from his grandparents to his children to his grandchildren. “Without them, I don’t think there would be any reason to be alive.â€
